Denny Zepnick Memorial Scholarship - Protocol and Information for Applicants
 


Purpose of the Scholarship

To foster excellence and specialist clinical expertise in palliative care in the Loddon Mallee region, through further education.


Eligibility


The applicant will be:

  • a person without formal palliative care training/education currently working in the Loddon Mallee Region who has a special interest in palliative care

or

  • a person wishing to up skill, and/or upgrade qualifications, in specialist palliative care

  • involved in the provision of care for palliative care clients or families at present, and in the future.

  • able to acquire knowledge and skills through further education to develop, or further develop, specialist expertise in their discipline in relation to palliative care delivery e.g. a palliative care practitioner may wish to pursue specialist education in an aspect of palliative care such as pain management, or undertake a post graduate course of study in palliative care.

  • required to use the knowledge and skills acquired in their work in service delivery and care of palliative care clients.

The education/course/ conference/seminar/workshop must be specific to palliative care.

Completion of the application form must be accompanied by:

  • An abstract of 200 – 300 words outlining how the education/training/conference or seminar/workshop attendance will assist in the delivery of palliative care.
  • Information, and an outline, from the education center/organization conducting the education/training/conference or seminar/workshop
  • A letter of support from the Coordinator for the Community Based Palliative Care Service in the Sub Region of the Loddon Mallee Region in which the applicant works .

The applicant may be required to be interviewed by a selection panel, to discuss their scholarship application

 

Selection

Loddon Mallee Palliative Care Consultative Service will process applications and present those that meet the criteria to the Loddon Mallee Palliative Care committee for selection for the award.

Scholarship Funds

Specific funding is available annually. Distribution of any unspent funds will be at the discretion of the Loddon Mallee Palliative Care Committee.

Conditions 

  • Study (or attendance) is to be commenced within six (6) months of the scholarship being granted. An extension may be applied for (for course work) on an Extension Application Form, including study that has duration of more than six (6) months. The Loddon Mallee Palliative Care Committee will consider extension requests and applicants will be notified within 30 days of application being received.
  • Scholarship payments are towards study or fees costs only, i.e. course fees, books will be considered. Scholarship fees will not support ancillary education / training costs, i.e. travel, accommodation and meals.
  • Payments will be made by means of reimbursement of the awardee following successful attendance and/or completion of the set requirements of the education/training/conference or seminar/workshop, and receipt of the report as detailed below.
  • Successful applicants must write a report of between 200 and 500 words, upon completion of their course or attendance - or at the end of each year if funding is for a course of more than one (1) year's duration. The report should include what has been learned and how it will assist the scholarship holder and patients / clients. The report is to be submitted to the Loddon Mallee Palliative Care Consultative Service within four weeks of completion or attendance. The report will be available for use at the Loddon Mallee palliative care Committee's discretion, e.g. the report may be made available to other potential applicants of the scholarship to assist in study decision-making.

General Information

A course may be partially funded. For example, a person undertaking a $1,500 course may receive a contribution towards course fees.

The Loddon Mallee Palliative Care Service Committee may review eligibility, application criteria and conditions at any time.

The deliberations and determinations of the Loddon Mallee palliative care Committee are final and no discussion or debate regarding applications, processes, or outcomes will be entered into.
